#006 - #keepingitpeel

In tribute to the great man (why?) a couple of tunes from my favourite Peel Sessions.  First up, from the Billy Bragg sessions, of which there were a fair few, a cover of Jeanne, the B-side from This Charming Man.  Hadn't heard the Smiths version when I listened to this; so, once again, an education from Mr Peel.

Billy Bragg - Jeanne (recorded 20/08/85)

...and as a small tribute to, as the sleeve notes point out 'The first punk band to get a contract, the first to release a single, the first to release an album, the first to get into the LP charts, the first to get on the front cover of the music press, the first to tour America and the first to split up, reform, and split up again!'  Yep, the best of them all (IMHO) The Damned.  From punk classic to gothic masterpiece...

The Damned - New Rose (recorded 30/11/76)
The Damned - Stretcher Case Baby (recorded 10/05/77)
The Damned - Curtain Call Part 1 (recorded 06/10/80)

I'm sure there was no 'baby' on the Stretcher Case single, and I love the fact that a Peelie was happy with tracks that sauntered on for a good 10 minutes as Curtain Call does.  Not particularly punk I realise but hey it's a lovely track.  These tunes are from the CD, apologies, it won't happen again.
